5 Areas of an Internet Marketing Business

Internet marketing has become something of a buzz term these days. A lot of people are doing it, but not everyone understands the steps involved. Below is a list of five components involved in marketing a company online.

1. Web development:

Web development usually refers to the non-design component of building a website, ie writing code and mark-up. Projects can range from developing simple static pages, to complex internet applications, social networking services, and electronic businesses. Security is of course another big factor to consider when developing a site, especially with ecommerce and social networking sites, where personal details are shared.

2. Web design

While web development deals with the back-end of websites (and therefore isn't seen by the end-user), web design deals with the front-end, and therefore is. The graphics, colours, and visual experience that you have when visiting a websites can be attributed to its designer. Designers must consider issues like user-experience, layout, and content vs. image balance.

3. SEO

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is method of embedding keywords into web copy to increase it viability, and therefore ranking, on major search engines such as Google. Since search engines pride themselves on delivering the best and most relevant content to their audience, they have algorithms that scan websites to ensure that the keywords they are being optimised for, are relevant to the site. If it finds that they are, they will increase the sites rankings on their engine for that keyword. What this means, is that even small companies have the chance to rank on page one of Google for specific keywords.

4. PPC

Paid Search is a more targeted online marketing strategy than SEO, but also costs money to do. The good news is, that it only costs money when people click on your ad, and if they're clicking, they are probably looking for what you are selling. PPC ads are the ones found on the right hand side of search engine pages, as well as the top three results. Ad copy is written to attract the attention of searchers, and placement is based on clicks as well as price bidding.

5. Social media

Social media is becoming an increasingly important component of internet marketing. Because people/consumers are spending more and more time online, and doing so in a way where they are sharing, reviewing, and discussing topics of interest to brands, companies have felt the importance to join the conversation. By creating Facebook pages and competitions, Twitter profiles, and Digged accounts, brands are able to communicate with their audience and involve them in their decision making processes. Moreover, blogs are becoming the main source of information dissemination for many industries.
There are of course other areas of online marketing, so stay tuned for further articles.
